The National Commission for Women has raised concerns about obscene content on streaming platforms and social media. It has urged the government to take regulatory action to address the issue.
In a letter to the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the commission’s chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, called for immediate measures to curb the spread of such material.
The commission said the content is widely accessible and affects society, particularly women and children.
The panel cited violations of several laws, including the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and the Information Technology Act.
It has asked the ministry to issue strict guidelines preventing platforms from streaming or allowing users to upload inappropriate content. It also called for stronger content moderation and enforcement measures.
The commission has requested that the ministry inform it of any action taken to ensure follow-up on the matter.
