A father poisoned his 10-year-old son by mixing sodium nitrate in water, leading to the child’s death in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. The accused, 47-year-old Kalpesh, later surrendered at the police station, where he confessed to his crime.
According to the complaint filed by the accused’s elder brother, Yogesh Gohel, Kalpesh lived in Bapunagar with his wife, 15-year-old daughter Jiya, 10-year-old son Om, and his elderly parents.
On the morning of the incident, Kalpesh’s wife, Jayshree, had travelled to Mehsana district. Shortly after, Kalpesh gave some medicine to both his children. While Jiya remained unaffected, Om began experiencing severe stomach pain and started vomiting.
When Om’s condition worsened, his grandparents called an ambulance and rushed him to a nearby hospital. Jiya then made a call to her uncle Yogesh and informed him about Om’s condition. By the time Yogesh and his wife arrived at the hospital, doctors had declared Om dead. Jiya then revealed that her father had given them some medicine before leaving the house abruptly.
Meanwhile, Kalpesh had turned himself in at the Bapunagar police station. When Yogesh and some neighbours reached the police station, Kalpesh admitted to mixing around 30 grams of sodium nitrate in water and forcing Om to drink it.
As Om’s condition worsened and his lips turned blue, Kalpesh panicked and fled the house, and later surrendered before the police.
Bapunagar Police Station Inspector BG Chetriya said that Kalpesh had planned to commit suicide and had also given his children an anti-vomiting medicine before poisoning Om.
According to the police, Kalpesh may have been mentally unstable, though no prior medical treatment records have been found. Authorities have conducted a medical examination and have registered a case under Section 103(1) (punishment for murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act.
