Twitter CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that the US government has requested the suspension of 250k Twitter accounts, including those belonging to journalists and Canadian politicians, according to Fox News.
He revealed this when revealing the most recent set of “Twitter Files,” which were made public by writer Matt Taibbi.
“A US government agency has sought the suspension of 250k accounts, including journalists and Canadian officials!” Musk tweeted.
The fresh leak of internal Twitter conversations sheds light on the social media company’s connection with government agencies.
According to Fox News, Taibbi exposed the US government’s escalating and never-ending pressure on Twitter to collaborate with Congress in the hunt for Russian influence on the site.
The Global Engagement Center, which Taibbi describes as “a budding analytic/intelligence branches of the State Department,” went public with a report to the media that included a list of “suspicious accounts” that it said were “Russian identities and proxies.”
According to Fox News, Twitter’s subsequent task force to seek Russian influence on the platform found “no coordinated” effort and largely “lone-wolf” accounts with minimal ad buys.
These tales were defined based on criteria including “‘Describing the coronavirus as a designed bioweapon,’ ‘blaming “research done at the Wuhan institute,’ and ‘attributing the appearance of the virus to the CIA’,” according to Taibbi.
The GEC report featured a 250,000-name list of accounts that followed “two or more” Chinese diplomatic accounts.
Under pressure from the US government, Twitter suspended almost 250,000 accounts, including those linked to journalists, some questioning the origins of the virus, and accounts that followed “two or more” Chinese diplomatic accounts, according to Fox News.
Notably, an earlier tranche of the “Twitter Files” revealed that former President Donald Trump was de-platformed due to staff pressure from the social media corporation.
Since Musk took over as CEO of the microblogging service, there have been several adjustments. He just revealed a tweak to the platform’s ‘Bookmarks’ feature’s User Interface.
Musk mentioned that the planned updates will make it “Easy to construct folders to bookmark tweets into various categories”.
However, Musk has revealed “significant backend server architectural modifications” to the platform.
The multibillionaire previously stated that the new Twitter Policy will not only follow science but will also legitimately debate science.
“New Twitter policy is to follow the science, which unavoidably includes reasoned scientific inquiry,” Musk tweeted.
“Anyone who thinks that criticising them is disputing science itself cannot be considered a scientist,” Musk said in a follow-up tweet to his earlier policy declaration.
