The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged gang rape in Sandeshkhali.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh ordered that the SIT be led by the Assistant Commissioner of the Homicide Branch, Lalbazar, with the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Baduria, Basirhat Police District, as a member. The team will determine additional members as needed.
The court mandated that the SIT submit a progress report to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) of Basirhat every month. Forensic experts will visit the crime scene to collect necessary evidence, and police protection for the victim will continue.
The victim had filed a case in the high court against three individuals, including Trinamool Congress block president Dilip Mallick and Saikat Das. Despite lodging a complaint at the Sandeshkhali police station in May 2024, no arrests have been made yet.
