A massive fire broke out in the market of Sonamarg, a resort town in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday, officials said.
The fire started in a restaurant and spread to nearby shops, they said. Firefighters were at the scene working to contain the blaze, officials added.
Videos showed significant damage to shops in the market. Sonmarg is a popular tourist destination.
In a post on X, the deputy commissioner of Ganderbal said emergency personnel, including firefighters from Gund Kangan, the Army, the State Disaster Response Force and local residents, were working to control the fire.
“Five fire vehicles on-site, operations are in full swing, blaze has been brought under control. Efforts are on to extinguish the fire,” the official said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he was in touch with local officials to ensure assistance.
“My office is in constant touch with the local administration to ensure all possible assistance reaches those in need. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and businesses. In this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with you and will do everything possible to support your recovery,” Abdullah stated on X.
