One student died, and 23 others were injured after a pick-up van overturned in Odisha’s Subarnapur district on Sunday. The van was on its way to the Republic Day celebrations.
The vehicle was carrying 23 students, all in Class 10, from North Banki Mala Biharpur Government School in Athagarh to the Saranda ground for the Republic Day event when the accident occurred.
According to sources, the accident was caused by a loose front wheel, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The driver and three students sustained critical injuries.
Two of the critically injured were rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Cuttack, where they are currently undergoing treatment in the trauma ward.
According to a local doctor, “We have received 23 students from the Banki police station area. One pick-up van overturned while carrying the students to attend the Republic Day function. Four students were brought in critical condition, while one died on the road. Four students were shifted to SCB Medical College, and the administration has been informed to look into the matter.”
The doctor added that the rest of the students sustained minor injuries.
