By receiving a nomination for MM Keeravani’s Naatu Naatu in the Best Original Song category for the 2018 Oscars, RRR has created history. This marks the culmination of months of anticipation, during which time director SS Rajamouli promoted the movie extensively in the US both in person and online.
The historical epic RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli, has received a nomination for the Best Original Song Oscar at the upcoming 95th Academy Awards.
The RRR song “Naatu Naatu” is up against “Applause” (Tell it Like a Woman), “Hold My Hand” (Top Gun: Maverick), “Lift Me Up” (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and “This is a Life” in the category of Best Original Song (Everything Everywhere All At Once).
Actress Allison Williams and actor-rapper-producer Riz Ahmed made the nominations official on Tuesday night. Rahul Sipligunj, MM Keeravani, and Kala Bhairava are each nominated for the song “Naatu Naatu” individually. Previously, “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire by AR Rahman and Gulzar took home the prize for Best Original Song.
The epic action movie RRR, in which NTR Jr. and Ram Charan star, has been gaining popularity in the US over the past few months after becoming a cult favourite following its Netflix launch. The movie received support from prominent Hollywood figures, and as interest developed, a complex awards campaign was eventually launched.
SS Rajamouli was chosen as the campaign’s spokesperson since he visited multiple screenings and took part in Q&A sessions with devoted fans. He was accompanied by his two stars a few weeks ago as they took part in a final round of campaigning and attended the Golden Globes. RRR won the Best Original Song Golden Globe for “Naatu Naatu,” and the group subsequently took home two Critics Choice Awards.
Rajamouli won the New York Film Critics Circle’s Best Director Award, and RRR was also named one of the best 10 movies of the year by the National Board of Review.
Importantly, the Gujarati film Chhello Show was chosen as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature category at the Oscars, replacing RRR. RRR was widely believed to be a lock for the selection. The movie was also passed over for nominations at the Producers Guild of America and Directors Guild of America awards, which are both seen as significant (and reliable) indicators of Oscar success.
Since Lagaan was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars more than 20 years ago, RRR’s nomination is the largest win for Indian cinema. Since then, Slumdog Millionaire has garnered popularity in the country after winning the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars in 2009.
However, despite being a British production, it also earned the Oscars for sound designer Resul Pookutty, composer AR Rahman, and lyricist Gulzar. The outfits Bhanu Athaiya designed for Richard Attenborough’s Best Picture winner Gandhi made her the first Indian to ever receive an Academy Award. For his score for the same movie, Ravi Shankar received nominations as well. Legendary director Satyajit Ray received an honorary Oscar in 1992.
The Dolby Theatre will host the 95th Academy Awards on March 13 (IST), and comedian Jimmy Kimmel will serve as the host for the third time.
